Congratulations on some awesome books you have published recently. I have read Dark Waters and Falling Again and I love them both... (I may be biased - I love all your stories!)

CQ: [say something nice and funny and CQ!] Thanks, RJ - what was the bribe again? Chocolate, red wine, warmed baby oil and a naked JA?

RJ: Tell us a bit more about Dark Waters. I know this was originally a story you published a few years back. What made you re-release it? I am so glad you did!

CQ: Well, I wasn’t very happy with the cover the previous publisher had for it, and the thought of a Reese Dante cover made my mouth water. So I did some re-editing and submitted it to Silver Publishing in the hopes they’d accept it for a second edition. They did, and I couldn’t be happier! The cover is everything I’d wished for, and I’m hoping the story will reach a new readership.

RJ: Where can we buy it?

CQ: It’s available from Silver Publishing - and their titles can be sent direct to your Kindle. Silver Publishing - Dark Waters

RJ: And now on to Falling Again - This most recent release is a short story that you have self published. What made you decide to release a short story?

CQ: Well, it was originally intended for an Anthology call, but it sort of took off in a different direction and no longer fitted that Anthology. I checked some other calls out there, but it didn’t really fit them, either. I’d been playing with the idea of self-publishing for a while, and this seemed an ideal opportunity to try it. It’s on Amazon here - Amazon - Falling Again

RJ: What was self publishing like?

CQ: In a word? Nerve-racking. And that’s with a certain somebody doing all the hard work. One day I’ll be able to make it up to her *g*.

RJ: ROFL... payment in mutual support works!

RJ: What are you writing now?

CQ: I’m in the last stages of Fool’s Rush, the third in the trilogy I’m writing for Manifold Press. It’ll hopefully be ready for release on February 1st, 2013.

RJ: What are your plans for future books? Any more self pubs?

CQ: Future plans? Oh, God, yes. My Plot Ideas list just gets longer and longer. To be honest, I don’t know what I’ll be working on next - several plots and people have their elbows out, demanding attention. But I’ll certainly be looking to self-pub again in the future.

RJ: Thanks for coming over and chatting.. Good luck on the new release.

CQ: This has been fun, as always *g*. And don’t forget, we need to arrange that research expedition to the HellFire Caves...

Chris Quinton has a website at chrisquinton.com and her facebook is here chris.quinton.14

Excerpt from Dark Waters

Chapter One

"Incubus!" the hermit howled, springing to his feet and holding the crudely fashioned cross before him. The shaft was a spike of forged iron, not sharp but enough to pierce the creature's flesh. He'd finally found the strength to deny it and since dawn he'd waited for the beast to come to him so he could banish or destroy the unnatural enticement. Now it was here, in the perfect man-shape that mocked every belief the hermit held and was everything he himself was not.

It stopped in its tracks at the edge of the small corrie in front of the hermit's cave, its head thrown up in surprise, long black hair flowing in the breeze. Layers of firm muscle shifted under a hide glowing amber in the noon sun as if fashioned from the light, and it was naked. Naked and profligate, flaunting its apparent youth and potency, its overwhelming vitality, like the Satanic spawn it was.

Even now, it lured him, silently called to him to reach out and stroke at last the warm silk of its skin, its unbound hair. As it had called to others before it killed and devoured them. Although he knew what the thing was and what he had to do, he could not stop his traitorous body from responding to its sorcery.

"What is—incubus?" it asked, puzzled.

"You!" In his bespelled madness, he'd taught it human speech, the Gaelic, convincing himself that if it did have a soul then he could turn it from evil to Christ's mercy. But the sinful dreams that afflicted him at night, leaving him sullied beyond cleansing when he awoke, could no longer be ignored. The memories of them welled up as clear as if they had been reality. It would kneel before him and part his robes, its eyes wide and dark as it gazed on him with awe. It would worship his body with hands and mouth and wicked tongue, and beg him to save it from evil, to purify it with his touch.

Arousal shuddered through him, heat pooled in his loins, and his penis was throbbing between his legs, rising as if it had a mind of its own, and he was close, so close to that dazzling peak of ecstasy. But the coarse wool of his robe chafed on his turgid flesh, dragging painfully on the gathering dampness there, bringing him back to himself—and the hermit knew that he was irrevocably damned and it was all the beast's fault.

He'd lost count of how often he'd been awakened by the echoes of his cry of release, to find he was alone with his own seed smeared on his belly, and the terrible—wonderful—images fading away. Every time he'd scrubbed himself raw with twists of heather, but still he knew himself defiled even though he had resisted all temptation to touch it in reality.

He'd thought he could tame it, bring it humbled and penitent before the house of the One God. But he'd been deluded, he knew that now. The monster was a soulless fiend that preyed on humankind, and he was a presumptuous fool to think he could do anything other than combat it. He could not have it, but he could destroy it.

"You are foul! Evil!" He raised the cross like a dagger and threw himself forward.

Even as he plunged the holy weapon toward the creature's broad chest, the hermit knew he had failed. He'd forgotten how swiftly it could move. In less than a heartbeat the man had gone and in its place was a daemon in the shape of a bay stallion with laid-back ears and bared carnivore's fangs. It reared and the last thing the hermit knew was the crushing impact of the monster's hooves.

If that gels, I fix the title, and start a proper synopsis and build characters. Not that it’s carved in stone, of course.

RJ: So you have this story in your head. Does it ever refuse to be written down on paper - do you ever experience writer's block?

CQ: Do I ever! Mental Constipation is a pain in my virtual arse! [can I say that?]

RJ: As long as it’s a virtual arse then I am happy.... ROFL!
RJ: What do you do to get past the mental block?

CQ: Usually, getting out of the house helps. For instance, I’ve been finding that Finders Keepers, the current WiP, has been sluggish. I get in the train Wednesday and by the time I’ve reached Chester I have a couple of thousand words scribbled. But the simple fact of walking from home to my favorite coffee shop does the trick.

RJ: Do you ever have days where the words flow so fast that you get cramp in your hand?

CQ: Oh, yes! Not as many as I’d like, but when the words flow as if you’re taking dictation, it’s a blast!

RJ: What books have most influenced your life most?

CQ: That’s a hard one. Let’s see - I discovered The Return of the King Trilogy and Mary Renault’s The Last of the Wine round about the same time when I was 12 or 13, Then I found CJ Cherryh’s Faded Sun trilogy, and I’d say they probably had the most impact on my reading and writing.

RJ: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? In your genre and outside of it?

CQ: If you mean new to me, there have been lots! Far too many to list here. In the new to publishing authors, over the last couple of years and in no particular order, it’s got to be Sue Brown, Stuart Wakefield, Kate Sherwood, and um, Whatsername - RG Somethingorother... But seriously, there are a lot of new writers I like, too many to mention.

RJ: You have helped me a lot since I first started writing. It was your support that had me turning in Oracle and I think there are plenty of people who would hunt you down and shoot you for doing that! ROFL... You were my mentor...If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

CQ: Mentoring you? You mean nagging, threatening, patting backs and feeding you chocolate and wine? It was a tough job but someone had to do it. *G* Besides, I had help when I started writing many years ago, so I just pay it forward. My mentors? Not that I’ve ever met them, but only devoured their books - CJ Cherryh for deep and complex characterisations both human and alien, world building and convoluted plots. Josh Lanyon for great plots and characters, and bringing the MM plot arcs into the mainstream of mystery and romance fiction. They’ve shown me how to do it, and I do my best to find my own way to emulate them.

RJ: Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
CQ: The friends I made when I started writing fanfiction way back in the 70’s. They are still close friends. We’re a widespread band of sisters *g*.

RJ: How do you handle reviews (bad or good!)

CQ: The good ones give me a warm, fuzzy feeling *g*. The bad ones that have absolutely no constructive criticism get laughed at and completely ignored. The bad ones that do have something constructive to say get thought about very carefully and kept in my internal editor’s file.

RJ: Okay, last question... I promise... What are your current projects?

CQ: Right. Okay. Um... Paradox is sitting with Silver Publishing and I’m waiting for the edits.
Finders, Keepers is the current WiP, and the first draft is about two-thirds done.
Bennett’s Folly is the collaboration with you - still in the planning stages. Then there’s Fool’s Rush, Oil and Water, The Lennox Selkie, Cause and Effect, Spiked, Taking a Chance - and about half a dozen more with titles, and even more still in vague outline.

Eye candy

RJ: I just remembered. I have one more VITAL question to ask you... If you met Alex O'Loughlin what would you say to him? Would you lose the power of rational speech or ask him relevant cutting edge questions?
CQ: LOL! I’d try for the cutting edge questions, but I’d probably end up being a giddy idiot. Hmm... Wonder if those tatts are real?

RJ: And what about Adrian Paul and Peter Wingfield... together... what would you say to them?

More eye candy!

CQ: Guh! Well, I already met Peter face to face and became ridiculously tonguetied, which considering he’s of an age to be my son, is plain silly. I’d almost certainly be the same with Adrian. I am obviously an old cougar at heart but with very little social courage.

RJ: On that note I want to thank you for answering my questions! And good luck with your new books. I have read both and I love them equally... xxx

CQ: Thanks for having me, hon [[[hugs]]] I appreciate the invitation, especially now. It’s been a crazy few weeks.

He doesn't want the attention of the local super-stud, but Luis is determined to win him. Cal has other problems. He's hearing things - voices that drove the previous tenant in his apartment to wholesale destruction. More here>>

Paradox - somewhen in 2012 from Silver Publishing
Phil is trapped in a coma, and he's sharing a parallel life. Andreas is there for him--which is not always a comfort.

Then, in no particular order, there's:

Bennett's Folly, which I'm co-writing with RJ Scott [a lot] later in the year. It's set in the same town as Riding For A Fall [see below]

How to turn a failing farm in the heart of England's West Country into an unusual going concern in one not so easy lesson. Sceptical neighbours, half a dozen bison, a piebald pony with an attitude problem and a belligerent tom turkey, are the least of Jason Bennett's problems.

Riding For A Fall - which I'm aiming for Silver's Fathers' Day call *if* I can keep it under 15k

Luke Petrie is back home in Fordingbridge, running the family bookstore. His ex-wife is about to go abroad for a lengthy period, so his young daughter comes to stay. Which is great as far as they are both concerned. Luke has no romantic interest in his life, until he reconnects with the first boy he crushed on. The trouble is, Steve is no more interested in him now as he was then.

And the others are further down on the To Do List

Finders, Keepers

Oil and Water - the sequel to Aloes and first refusal to Manifold Press

Spiked

Cause and Effect

The Carandor Interface

The Lennox Selkie

Tribulation

Amethyst

and sundry other wisps of ideas not yet solidified into a plot line.

Visit Chris online:

http://chrisquintonwriter.blogspot.com/
